Concerns Patients Bring to Us

Six areas of primary mental health care where our IMC-registered doctors provide same-day clinical support.

Anxiety

Generalised anxiety, panic attacks, health anxiety and social anxiety. Assessment, practical coping strategies, and medication where clinically indicated.

Sleep Problems

Trouble falling asleep, frequent waking, early-morning waking, or sleep anxiety. Focus on root cause (anxiety, mood, lifestyle) rather than immediate sedation.

Depression

Persistent low mood, low energy, loss of interest, hopelessness, or changes in appetite and sleep lasting more than two weeks. First-line treatment and referral where needed.

Grief & Loss

Support after the death of a loved one, relationship breakdown, job loss, or other major life change. Coping strategies and referral to bereavement counselling if helpful.

Stress & Burnout

Chronic workplace stress, exhaustion, loss of motivation, and stress-related physical symptoms. Sick notes available where clinically appropriate.

Mood Changes

Mood swings, irritability, emotional ups and downs that feel out of character. Initial assessment to understand what is going on and when specialist input is needed.

How We Actually Handle Paediatric Consultations

Four principles that shape every consultation. This is what you'd expect from a dedicated men's clinic delivered online.

Zero Judgment, Zero Small Talk

You do not have to build up to the reason you called. Your doctor is ready for it. No walking in past a waiting room, no explaining yourself to reception. The consultation begins where you want it to begin, at your pace.

Medication Plus Therapy, Where It Helps

Research shows that for moderate anxiety and depression, medication combined with talk therapy works better than either alone. Your doctor can prescribe, explain when to expect improvement (usually 1 to 3 weeks for SSRIs), and refer you for CBT, counselling, or psychology with an IACP-accredited therapist.

Evidence-Based, Not Reflex Prescribing

We follow HSE and NICE guidelines. That means for mild depression we may suggest self-help, lifestyle changes, or therapy before medication. For moderate symptoms we discuss both options. When we do prescribe, it is the right medication at the right dose, with clear information on side effects and timing.

Clear Escalation Path

If your symptoms need more than primary care, we refer you directly. That may be HSE Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), Primary Care Psychology, a private psychiatrist, or Jigsaw for young adults. Digital referrals sent the same day. No months of waiting for a second GP appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book. Can't find your answer? Give us a call.

01
Can Doctor247 prescribe antidepressants online?
Yes. Our IMC-registered doctors can prescribe SSRIs (like sertraline, escitalopram, citalopram) and SNRIs where clinically appropriate for adult anxiety or depression. Antidepressants typically take 1 to 3 weeks to start working and are reviewed at 2 to 4 weeks. We do not prescribe benzodiazepines (such as Xanax or diazepam), controlled sleeping tablets, or mood stabilisers online. These need an in-person specialist.
02
Can I get a sick note for work due to anxiety, depression or stress?
Yes, where clinically appropriate. After your consultation, the doctor can issue a digital medical certificate for short-term leave due to anxiety, depression, burnout or stress-related illness. Irish employers accept these certs from IMC-registered doctors. The cert is emailed the same day. We do not disclose the diagnosis to your employer unless you specifically request it.
03
What mental health conditions cannot be managed online?
Online is not safe or suitable for: active suicidal ideation or thoughts of harming yourself or others, severe depression needing urgent intervention, psychosis, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, severe eating disorders, or anyone already under specialist psychiatric care. In these cases, please contact your local GP, go to A&E, or call the Samaritans on 116 123 or Pieta House on 1800 247 247.
04
Is this therapy or counselling?
No. We are a GP-led primary mental health service. That means your doctor can assess symptoms, prescribe medication where appropriate, issue sick notes, and make referrals. For ongoing talk therapy, we refer you to accredited psychotherapists (IACP registered) or the HSE Primary Care Psychology service. A combined approach (medication plus therapy) often works best for moderate anxiety or depression.
05
Can I use this service for my teenager?
Our primary mental health service is for adults aged 18 and older. Mental health prescriptions for under-18s legally require direction from a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry consultant, not an online GP. For teens needing support, contact your local GP, Jigsaw youth mental health (jigsaw.ie), or in crisis the Samaritans on 116 123.
07
How long will I need to take antidepressants?
It depends on the condition. For a first episode of depression, guidelines suggest continuing for at least 6 months after symptoms improve to reduce the risk of relapse. For anxiety, treatment is often longer. Your doctor reviews you at 2 to 4 weeks, then every 1 to 3 months. When stopping, the dose is tapered slowly over weeks to avoid withdrawal effects. You are never forced to continue if you choose not to.
08
Will my regular GP know I used this service?
Only if you want them to. Your consultation notes and prescription are kept in your private Doctor247 patient account. Sharing with your regular GP is recommended for continuity of care (especially if you are on long-term medication), but it is your decision. We will never contact your GP without your permission. Your employer is never contacted.
